today is undergoing surgery. 11-year-old aaron hern from martinez is still in intensive care in a boston hospital. he was just six feet away from the blast, waiting for his mother to cross the finish line when the explosions went off. take a live look at martinez junior high. that's where his classmates have actually started a collection to help the family pay for medical expenses. about an hour ago, aaron hern's father spoke to nbc news about his son's ordeal. christie smith will bring you that story in about ten minutes. >> a follow-up on a story we have been covering since yesterday morning. at&t now says all cell phone service and internet service has been row stored in the morgan hill and gilroy areas. crews have been working throughout the night to try to repair a fiber optic cable after somebody cut that line early yesterday morning. investigators say the vandal then fired a rifle at a pg&e substation, that caused a big-time oil leak in one of the transformers. this morning, sheriff's deputies are still standing guard outside that substation. bob redell, "today in the bay," live a

injured in the boston marathon bombings. family members say aaron hearn was hit in the thigh by some of that that prap fell -- sh rappel we have -- shrapnel we've been talking about. sal castanedo has more about this. >> reporter: the hearn family is well-known in martinez. the father is a football coach. his children go to the local public schools. 12-year-old aaron hearn of martinez was one of the people hurt yesterday in the boston marathon attacks. his family says his injuries are serious but he's expected to survive. hearn who attends junior high is son of allen hearn. allen hearn is an alumy and p.e. teacher. today, the alhambra principal said before the race, the coach spoke of the excitement about his wife and the marathon. >> they were very excited that katherine qualified and allen and their friend went out to support them. >> reporter: the principal said she was removed to hear the coach and his wife and daughters were okay and is glad to know aaron's injuries are not life-threatening. she said today at lunch, students will write sympathy and get-well notes. >> good studen

family. i spoke to his father and he tells me how 11-year-old aaron hern is doing after the injuries. he was waiting near the finish line with his father and sister when the bomb went off and he suffered a bomb injury. aaron is a sixth grader at martinez junior high school where flags are flying at half staff. the students and staff are doing what they can to help a family. in one class they're raising donations putting them in a jar. the entire family is well known in this martinez community. aaron's father attended the high school where he is now a teacher and aaron's mother also teaches there. students signed cards for aaron. and his father told me by phone that his son should make a full recovery. >> i am still angry. but when he's on the ground and he has debris on him, it's not something that you expect. it's like being in a war zone, a combat zone. and he's 11 years old and there's a kid next to him that's eight, he's down on the ground and he doesn't look good. >> they did the preliminary clean up where the shrapnel hit him. he had debris that gave him abrasions. they did that ki

, right now we're learning more about the two homemade bombs. >> news team aaron gilchrist has more. >> reporter: the devices are being described as pressurer cooker bombs. these are not unfamiliar to law enforcement. according to somebody briefed on the explosion, the explosives were put in pressure cookers, hidden in bags and left on the ground. they were apparently packed with nails, shards, ball bearings, consistent with the injuries the doctors found yesterday. nbc news pete williams reported that the bombs were triggered by a timer as opposed to a remote detonator. we learned this type of bomb is frequently used in afghanistan and iraq, but also recently popped up in the u.s. one of the devices used in the times square attempted bombing was apparently a pressure cooker. now, we are hearing about a press conference at the top of the hour. we'll carry it live for you on nbc 4 and nbcwashington.com. >>> all right, thank you, aaron. >>> and we're finding out more about the victims killed as the identities were revealed. three died yesterday, we now know two names, 29-year-old krys

in the hospital in boston. >> reporter: aaron hern 12 years old still in intensive care at boston children's hospital. he is heavily sedated. he has a tube down his throat but he is doing okay. his mother posted an update on facebook last night saying that aaron has opened his eyes a couple of times and that he is communicating with nods that he is okay and comfortable but getting frustrated obviously with his lack of ability to communicate. so they are trying to keep him calm and rested. he is due for another surgery today. aaron went to boston with his family to cheer on his mom catherine as she ran the marathon. he has shrapnel wounds to the legs and one is severe requiring more surgery possibly eventually skin grafts. they should know more at the end of the day today. people here in the bay area are rallying around aaron and his family. this restaurant, rocks on main in martinez, hosted a special dinner last night with all proceeds going to the hern family and they say they will do this every tuesday until the family comes home. >> i'm here to sport family and the wonderful community w

: one of those injured in the blasts was 11 year old aaron hern from martinez. hern was in surgery again this afternoon. kron 4's j.r. stone is following the story. he has been in contact with his family. j.r.? >> reporter: the news from the hospital pam is good. the trauma surgeon successfully closed aaron's wounds a matter of hours ago. 11 year old aaron hern was hit with shrapnel when the bombs went off at the end of the boston marathon. he had been waiting with his father and sister for his mother to finish. his father described his injuries on his son's leg as looking like a war wound. well they likely look better than that tonight. the successful surgery means aaron will not need skin grafts. he also hasn't been able to talk because of the breathing tube that is being used. his mother told us earlier today that doctors were hoping to take that out. at this point though that hasn't happened. when aaron does occasionally wake up he uses a touchpad to write what he is thinking. he is starting to remember things as well. he told his mom he was worried about a boy who was next to him be
